Per diem is often used to describe work arranged one shift or day at a time. The label does not establish the full terms of an offer. Review the actual schedule, responsibilities and contractual arrangement before deciding whether it fits your needs.

Compare the arrangement

Casual, per diem, agency and travel opportunities can overlap in how they are described. Ask whether there is an ongoing commitment, how shifts are offered, whether you can decline, and what happens when a confirmed assignment changes.

Check qualifications and setting

Confirm current nursing registration and the experience needed for the specific assignment. Review orientation, client needs, equipment, available support and escalation procedures. A role title alone does not establish that an unfamiliar assignment fits your competence.

Compare pay using written offers

Check gross pay, payment unit, applicable charges, travel, benefits and cancellation terms. Compare equivalent roles and locations. Individual-shift work does not universally pay more than a permanent role, and benefits depend on the actual arrangement.

The earlier mid-$30s to high-$60s range did not identify a reproducible set of comparable Toronto offers. It should not be treated as a current wage benchmark or Staffy earnings forecast.
