Coming the Fall of 2017, will be a revolutionary training program to address sexual violence and harassment in the Ontario hospitality industry. The Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association (ORHMA) is partnering with the Ontario Tourism Education Corporation (OTEC) to bring to the industry a program called Stop It!

“We’re going to end up with a very dynamic and innovative training program that hasn’t existed before in the industry,” says Victoria Behune, OTEC President and Chief Executive Officer.

The program content will be put together based on input from a number of hospitality stakeholders. A curriculum made by hospitality professionals for hospitality professionals.

The program will have case studies of successful practices, a tool kit for managers, two online learning modules and a campaign to build awareness of the issue.

According to Fatima Finnegan, the Director of Corporate Marketing and Business Development at the ORHMA, the goal is to eliminate concern or uncertainty of how to handle a violence or harassment. It will explain what staff members are to do should there be an incident between staff members, customers or between both a staff member and customer. They will set frontline staff and managers with an understanding of what may be occurring in front of them and what they can or should do.

Along with 5 other programs, Stop It! received funding from the provincial government’s Action Plan to Stop Sexual Violence and Harassment. The purpose of the funding is to provide 25,000 hospitality professionals with training over the next three years. With an online presence, it is likely that the program will exceed the number of workers who complete the training, according to Bill Tremblay for Canadian Restaurant News.

There’s a lot of buzz surrounding the program, and relief within the industry that something like this is coming into play.
