5 Things Successful Restaurant Managers Never Do

1. Put too much on the menu

You may think you’re pleasing all the types of guests you get in, but this can overwhelm them and cause them to struggle making a decision when the waitress asks what they’d like to eat. According to research from Taylor & Francis, fine dining restaurants saw higher sales when offering 7–10 items per menu category. Casual and quick service concepts saw higher sales when offering 6 per category.

Having too many items can be especially problematic when you have multiple styles of cuisine on your menu. Indian, Italian, Korean… This can be confusing to your guests as to what kind of cuisine you offer, and what you specialize in! Downsize your menu to keep things streamlined (and cut down on food waste!) and focus on what cuisine your restaurant specializes in.

2. Hate on millennials

Older generations take note… You may think millennials are obsessed with avocado toast and putting everything on Instagram, but these are they types of guests you want to frequent your establishment. The average millennial eats out 5 times a week, and just think of all the photos they take of your food as free advertising on Instagram! This is also the best way to reach other millennials so make sure you are on top of your social media marketing.

3. Use an out-of-date website

Pretend you’re a guest who came across your restaurant’s Instagram account while deciding what to eat and decided to clicked on the website to view the menu. Is the menu on your website? Location? Hours? Is the website mobile responsive? If not, then it’s time for an upgrade! Research shows that 9 out of 10 smartphone owners use their devices when deciding where to eat. Your website should look great on a cell phone!

Don’t worry you don’t need to break the bank to get a great website. You can create your own with Squarespace or Wix.

4. Use dollar signs

It seems so simple, but get those dollar signs off the menu! According to a study from Cornell University, diners spend 8% more when dollar signs are removed. And interestingly, adding zeroes subconsciously suggests an item costs more. So get those zeros off to potentially increase sales.

5. Ignore Trends

Of course you don’t want to make significant changes to keep up with every trend, but it’s important to keep them in mind. For example, right now vegan food is a huge trend. Do you have vegan options that aren’t simply a salad? Stay true to what your restaurant stands for, and your classics but keep in mind what’s going to keep these guests happy.
